Recycling Coolants for Reuse

Recycling Coolants for Reuse

Metalworking fluids or machining coolant has traditionally been discarded or dumped, to landfill sites, over the shutdown period each year. Many companies operate by this policy which is not only unnecessary but also carries a significant financial and environmental impact.

Chemical Solutions and Innovations (CSI) has pioneered a system of “recycling” the coolant for reuse the following year, which involves the following process:

  • removing the coolant from the machine
  • treating at a low volume with chemical products
  • circulating the coolant in tanks over the period when the factory is shut
  • pumping the fluid back into machines once the factories start up in the new year

CSI takes samples of the fluid in the machine prior to shut down for testing purposes. The samples are tested by CSI’s analytical chemist in our dedicated laboratory to determine if the fluid is in a condition to be recycled and reused. Once the laboratory gives the go ahead the fluid is processed as mentioned above.

In doing this the customer saves on product cost, waste removal cost, start-up costs, environmental impact and has invested in hardware that is utilised throughout the year for water storage and use.

CSI is active in encouraging customers to adopt this process over the shutdown period and has tailor made solutions to suit our customer’s needs.

Every person has a responsibility to look after the environment and recycling the coolant in this way is a cost effective and easy method of looking after our heritage

Metalworking Fluid & Hidden Costs

The metalworking fluid (coolant) cost should account for 1% of the total cost of the machining process (the other costs when producing parts on a machine tool include the machine cost, material cost, tooling costs, labour costs, energy costs and
